Y ou make a point to wash your car regularly and get an oil change every few thousand miles. But when's the last time you've considered upgrading the interior of your ride for the sake of your safety or comfort behind the wheel? New research by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety's Longitudinal Research on Aging Drivers (LongROAD) project found that 70 percent of seniors polled experience occasional aches, pains, arthritis, knee injuries, or other health conditions that can make driving unsafe or painful. Even so, they found that 90 percent of senior drivers don't utilize— or aren't aware of—easy, inexpensive accessories that can reduce one's risk of a crash and mitigate discomfort in the driver's seat. A host of devices are available, including seat pads and cushions that can relieve musculoskeletal pain and improve a driver's sightlines; convex mirrors to minimize blind spots; steering wheel covers, which can make steering easier for arthritic drivers; pedal extensions; and hand controls, which come in handy for those with injuries to the lower extremities. Researchers note that drivers should work with a trained technician when adding accessories to ensure safe installation and stress that, for many, these affordable adjustments can add years to a person's driving career.
