news, views, events, etc. h o u s e c a l l s { winter 2018 } 5 buzz the We're in the throws of the chilly months, meaning we're also knee-deep in flu season (it runs through March and, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or the CDC, February was the peak month of activity in 2016). Luckily, the CDC spells out three ways to help prevent falling ill—or curtailing the flu's impact if it does strike. Get the flu shot, if you haven't already. The CDC strongly recommends that every person six months old or older get one annually. Though it's best to get the vaccination prior to the start of flu season, it can still help. Those who are especially at risk for influenza-related complications (and thus are most in need of one) include children, pregnant women, and the elderly, as well as people who live or spend time with folks in this category. Be proactive about preventing the spread of germs. Wash your hands frequently—more often than usual—using soap and warm water and avoid mindlessly touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Avoid close contact with someone who's exhibiting symptoms; if you're the one with the germs, always cough or sneeze into a tissue, discard it after use, then wash your hands. If you catch it, don't hesitate to call your doctor. In most cases, the flu can be treated at home with ample rest and fluids and use of over-the-counter meds to ease symptoms. However, if you're a person at higher risk or you share a house with someone who is, contact your doctor, who may prescribe antiviral drugs—medications that, especially when taken within the first two days of symptoms surfacing, can help lessen the severity and length of the sickness.
