NAME: DR. LAURI BULLEN SPECIALTY: Obstetrics and gynecology OUTSIDE THE OFFICE, FIND HER: Gardening and exploring her Awendaw neighborhood with her husband and twin sons PRACTICE: Roper St. Francis Physician Partners - OB/GYN picture of health D r. Lauri Bullen is one busy woman. As an OB/GYN at Roper St. Francis Physician Partners, she regularly logs 80-hour workweeks. And when she's not delivering babies or otherwise caring for patients, she and her husband, Jason, are chasing after their six-year-old twins, Sam and Owen. In this season of life, her days are long and hectic, but the Dublin, Georgia, native wouldn't have it any other way. "Medicine is my calling," she says. "It's such a privilege to be involved in a patient's birth experience, and I think being a mom helps me connect in those moments even more. I also really enjoy the relationships I get to establish with patients over the years, helping them through issues associated with different life stages." Dr. Bullen loves her career, but with such a packed schedule, work-life balance can be a challenge. "Jason and I try to be intentional about our priorities of God, family, and work," she notes, referencing her husband's job as an environmental health and safety specialist at the Google Data Center in Berkeley County. Between the demands of work and family, Dr. Bullen admits that there's little time left for her to focus on her own well-being. To that end, she writes herself a simple but powerful Rx: each week, no matter how crowded her calendar, she gets out in nature. She doesn't travel far to get her fix. In 2015, she and Jason moved to Pepper Plantation in Awendaw, in part because the neighborhood's network of lushly wooded trails offers easy access to the great outdoors. While walking these tree-lined paths, Dr. Bullen enjoys fresh air and frequent glimpses of local wildlife. "There's a huge pond with egrets and herons, lots of deer walking around— Simple Measures Dr. Lauri Bullen proves you don't have to move mountains to reap the mind-body benefits of fresh air and gentle exercise – BY BRIDGET VENATTA h o u s e c a l l s { winter 2018 } 39 P H O T O G R A P H S B Y L E I G H W E B B E R
