"The biggest improvement is that I'm able to exercise again," says Nicole. "I had been on a good exercise regimen prior to the injury and stopped running or walking when it happened. I'm still not running yet as it's too jarring, but I am able to walk and keep up with my son Jeremiah, who is 2, and daughter Rhetta, who is 7." NICOLE GREEN, 35 Summerville DIAGNOSIS: Herniated disc (diagnosed in fall 2016) SYMPTOMS: I first felt pain in May 2016. It was in my hip and radiated down my right leg. It was a sharp stabbing pain that got worse when I coughed, sneezed, or upon standing or sitting for long periods. It got progressively worse and I had a series of random falls throughout the summer—I slipped in water, tripped on an extension cord, fell pulling a lawn mower up a hill. TREATMENT: I had a lumbar laminectomy at the L5/S1 vertebrae February 28, 2017. I've been in physical therapy since March and am just finishing that up. I was prescribed pain medicine and muscle relaxers—I'm still taking the muscle relaxers but only ibuprofen or Tylenol, if needed. THE OUTCOME: I feel better than I have in a year! The leg pain was gone almost instantly after surgery. I still have occasional muscle spasms and will sometimes have soreness in my back if I've done a lot during the day, but I am able to do almost everything I was doing before surgery. h o u s e c a l l s { summer 2017 } 25
