Let this season guide you to good health by taking advantage of all it has to offer: Get your vitamin G. Whether it's pumpkin picking at Boone Hall Plantation or playing a game of touch football before Thanksgiving dinner, get outside often. Study after study touts that vitamin G—or time spent in green space—helps lower stress, improve sleep, strengthen the immune system, and ward off negative thoughts. Take advantage of the time change. Don't let the end of Daylight Savings Time on November 6 sneak up on you. Be sure your sleep hygiene is in order leading up to it (try cutting the caffeine by 2 p.m. and avoiding electronics in bed) so you can actually snooze through that extra hour of sleep. Shop for foods in fall colors. Doing so will fill your cart with nutrient-rich produce like sweet potato (packed with B vitamins and vitamin A), Swiss chard (loaded with antioxidants, iron, and vitamin K), and apples of all variety full of flavonoids, consumption of which may help ward off hypertension, diabetes, and cancer. (For delicious recipes starring apples, turn to page 43.)
