F all is our brilliant (how about those sunsets!), refreshing season of change here in Charleston, and this fall, that's certainly true for our healthcare system and for me personally. As you may know, I have announced my retirement at the end of 2016, after 13 years of service to Roper St. Francis, and I am thrilled that my successor, Lorraine Lutton, FACHE, will be joining us in November. She is a dynamic leader and innovator, and it's a testimony to our amazing team of healthcare professionals that we are able to attract such talent to Charleston. It's a bittersweet milestone for me to wind down a long career that has brought such satisfaction. There is no more challenging and rewarding field to work in than healthcare, and no finer community to serve than the people of the Lowcountry. I am indebted to you for trusting us to care for your loved ones. What a privilege it has been to listen to your stories and meet your needs both in terms of healthcare and community outreach. I am proud to look back over my years with you and see how much Charleston has grown and how far Roper St. Francis has come. The first "President's Letter" I wrote for House Calls (Spring/Summer 2003), I talked about a new radiology archiving system that allowed doctors to view images remotely via the Internet. Wow! Today we have integrated electronic medical records, Patient Portals, and sophisticated technologies that allow truly seamless care throughout our 100- plus Roper St. Francis facilities across seven counties. Our forthcoming Berkeley Hospital is moving ahead at full steam as more and more people move to that area, and the Roper St. Francis Mount Pleasant Hospital we opened in 2010 is thriving. We have welcomed Toni Flowers as our first-ever Chief Diversity Officer to continue nurturing an inclusive team. This fall, the golden sunlight across the marsh is more splendid than ever, and it reminds me that as seasons change, beauty always abounds. My years with you and with our dedicated Roper St. Francis team have been more than beautiful. They've been exciting, meaningful, and productive, and I am energized by what lies ahead for this region's premier healthcare system. With deep gratitude for our time together, and wishes for the blessings of good health this fall and always.
