last page Every Moment Matters The Boone Hill Fork Trail, a five-mile loop, should have been a leisurely stroll for Sam Clawson. The active 71 year old has hiked several sections of the Appalachian Trail, including a recent two-week trek through Virginia with his daughter. "It didn't have a lot of elevation gain, I just got really winded and had to take a seat," says Sam. He and his wife, Betsy, both knew what was going on: it was his heart. During an annual checkup, a Roper St. Francis Healthcare primary care doctor discovered that Sam had a heart murmur and referred him to a cardiologist. An echocardiogram revealed he had mitral valve prolapse. Until that day, he hadn't experienced any noticeable symptoms. Now, heart surgery was inevitable.
