For an estimated five percent of the population (or one in every 200 people), however, they can result in a potentially life-threatening allergic reaction called anaphylaxis. If you experience the following symptoms, call 9-1-1 immediately. However, the season's warmer weather—and our increased time spent outdoors—ups our risk for run-ins with critters like bees, mosquitoes, jellyfish, and fire ants. The good news? The vast majority of summertime bites and stings are bothersome, but not dangerous. BITES 101 TO REMOVE A BEE STINGER, DON'T PINCH AND PULL IT WITH YOUR FINGERS OR TWEEZERS DOING SO WILL INJECT MORE VENOM. INSTEAD, SCRAPE THE STINGER OUT SIDEWAYS USING A CREDIT CARD OR YOUR FINGERNAIL. U S D A South Carolina is home to 6 VENOMOUS SPECIES OF SNAKES (5 pit vipers and the coral snake). Pit vipers, which include copperheads and cottonmouths. have a triangular- shaped head; coral snakes have alternating red and black bands, with skinny yellow bands in between. If a snake bites you, seek urgent care immediately. S C D N R SPECIES OF MOSQUITOES LIVE IN THE LOWCOUNTRY AND 30 OF THOSE PREY ON HUMANS AND PETS. IT WAS ACCIDENTALLY BROUGHT TO ALABAMA FROM SOUTH AMERICA AROUND 1940 AND HAS BEEN SPREADING THROUGHOUT THE SOUTH EVER SINCE. S C D H E C Spot a purple or red flag on the beach? Purple flags denote that dangerous marine animals like jellyfish or sharks have been spotted; red flags mean "extreme hazards" are present in the water; two red flags indicate that the water is closed for swimming.
