THE TRUTH: To further dispel this myth (which has been making rounds since one scientist wrote a hypothesis about it more than 20 years ago), researchers in Denmark studied data on more than 650,000 children born between 1999 and 2010 collected over 12 years. They found no higher rates of autism among kids who had received the measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine than children who had not. According to a new study from Tufts University, however, we should be shopping for our nutrients in the produce section instead. To evaluate how vitamins and minerals consumed from both foods and supplements may aect longevity, researchers analyzed data from more than 27,000 American adults. They found adequate intake of certain vitamins by way of food, including vitamin K and magnesium, to be associated with a reduced risk of death by all cause. The same intake of vitamins in supplement form, however, did not provide any decrease in mortality rates. Researchers also found that excess consumption of calcium supplements may be linked with an increased risk of death (excess calcium via food was not). Though there are certain cases in which supplements are indeed beneficial—like folic acid for pregnancy—the best way to reap the health-boosting eects of vitamins is to eat a well-rounded diet that's packed with them.
