W hile netting 10,000 steps per day is widely considered a gold-standard goal for wellness, that benchmark isn't rooted in science, note researchers behind a new study out of Brigham & Women's Hospital. (In fact, it's thought that the 10,000-step target was first introduced decades ago as part of a marketing campaign for a Japanese pedometer.) To find out how many steps can actually boost a person's overall health, researchers enlisted 17,000 women with an average age of 72. Participants wore clip-on pedometers to track daily step count, and researchers followed up with them after roughly four years. They found 4,400 steps to be an important benchmark: Women who averaged that number or higher were 40 percent less likely to have died throughout the study than those who netted less. Surprisingly, those benefits maxed out around 7,500 steps. So reset your expectations and gets strolling! Do 10,000 Steps Seem Unreachable? If so, don't sweat it, says a new study Hot & Cold Over the years, research has found that men generally like cooler temperatures, while women prefer warmer spaces. (As for why, science explains that men have a higher metabolic rate than women, meaning they expend more energy at rest.) A new study published in the peer-reviewed journal PLOS One shows that it's not just a matter of comfort: The temperature of a space can impact a person's cognitive performance. For the study, more than 500 German college students completed math and verbal problems in rooms warmed to temperatures between 61 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Researchers found that, on average, the warmer the room got, the better the women performed on both kinds of tests (for each one-degree-Celsius increase in temperature, they answered an average of 1.5 percent more math questions and one percent more word problems correctly). Meanwhile, the opposite trend occurred among men. Whether you run warmer or cooler than your officemates, utilizing sweaters, blankets, and fans to stay comfortable may be worth the extra effort. Try this! FOR A JELLYFISH STING. Rinse the aected area with vinegar. Its mild acidic properties are thought to inhibit the nematocysts, or microscopic stingers, that are left behind when jellyfish tentacles brush against skin.
