D ear friends, I am proud to come to work each day—proud of the quality that Roper St. Francis Healthcare delivers and proud of the compassion I see our teammates offer both to our patients and each other. Healthcare can be demanding, even under optimal circumstances, and then something like a hurricane evacuation adds further stress. It was wonderful to see how our teammates rose to the occasion during Hurricane Florence and how they have offered assistance and outreach to our neighbors in South and North Carolina who were harder hit. They show me each day that the power of a community health system truly lies in the "community" part. Speaking of community, I hope you saw us and perhaps joined us at the Charleston Pride Parade in late September and at the Komen Race for the Cure or the Heart Walk, among other places. Roper St. Francis Healthcare is out and about serving and representing the greater Charleston community in many ways. But there are quieter ways, too, that we work to ensure that our mission of "healing all people" indeed means all. That includes people with end-stage disease who sadly can no longer be cured but still deserve the highest quality of compassionate care until their last moments. Our new Roper Hospice Cottage in Mount Pleasant serves these patients—providing a place of extraordinary comfort and hospice care at the end of life. And "all people" certainly also means people who live in Berkeley County, who will soon be able to receive convenient, quality care at our new Roper St. Francis Medical Office Building opening this December on the campus of our forthcoming Roper St. Francis Berkeley Hospital. The fall is always a busy season, energized by cooler temperatures and crisp air. I hope you'll take a moment to read this issue of House Calls, with helpful information in our timely feature about teen mental health and a potentially life-saving lesson in Hands-Only CPR. Plus, as always, some yummy recipes and fitness tips on my favorite form of exercise—running. Enjoy!
