When she was in high school, her 63-year-old father, a type 2 diabetic with high blood pressure who had undergone triple bypass surgery, died from obesity-related complications. Now, her mother, also 63, has had quadruple bypass surgery and suffers from congestive heart failure. "After seeing my parents suffer, I knew I wanted a different path," says the 32-year-old North Charleston resident. So Shelley, who was prediabetic and weighed 256 pounds but had difficulty losing weight on her own due to thyroid issues, turned to Dr. Kenneth Mitchell with Roper St. Francis Bariatrics & Metabolic Services. "From the first information session on, Dr. Mitchell and his team have been incredible about educating me and supporting me on my weight-loss journey," she says. "They empowered me every step of the way and really set me up for lifelong success." Two years post-gastric bypass surgery, Shelley has lost more than 100 pounds; has been able to stop taking blood pressure and blood sugar medicines; enjoys exercising; and feels happy, healthy, and confident. "I love being able to keep up with my four-year-old daughter," she says. Every Moment Matters To learn more about Shelley's bariatrics journey, go online too w w w . r f s h . c o m / s h e l l e y .
