h o u s e c a l l s { summer 2018 } 13 Catch the Beat Want to bond with your kids? Turn up the jams F rom lullabies to nursery rhymes, parents often use songs to teach and connect with their tiny tots. But in many cases, that shared experience fades over time, with mom and dad tuning into their radio station of choice in the front seat (classic rock, anyone?) as kids or teens wear earbuds in the back, opting for T. Swift or the latest from Drake. However, a new study from the University of Arizona shows that music can be a powerful tool for bolstering a parent's bond with their children. Researchers surveyed 157 young adults, inquiring how often they listened to tunes with their parents during childhood and adolescence as well as the current state of their relationship. Data showed a strong positive association between the two, meaning the more music-related memories participants could recall (especially during their teen years), the closer they currently felt to their parents. As for why, study authors explain that synchronization, such as singing or dancing in tandem, often occurs when people listen to music together, as does a silent exchange of the emotions that can be evoked by a song. They add that other musical experiences, like seeing a concert or playing instruments together, can also strengthen those bonds. So whether it's the Hamilton soundtrack or a new band your kid's crazy for, find some tunes you can all enjoy and jam out!
